For this inaugural event, it is our great honor to welcome Dr. Rita Charon, M.D., PhD. Dr. Charon has forged new conversation regarding Story and Medicine through her defining of a new, globally embraced, discipline, Narrative Medicine. Her work deepens the practice and care of Surgeons, Physicians, Pathologists, PA’s, RN’s, Social Workers, and Chaplains around the state of North Carolina. Lenoir-Rhyne University, Mars Hill University, Eastern Carolina University, Duke University, University of North Carolina, and Wake Forest, as well as other fine institutions, have all established programs in Narrative Medicine, whether by adopting narrative practice or by engaging in narrative-based special events. It is with gratitude that we welcome Dr. Charon to further share wisdom and insight into the how the Humanities have what Medicine needs as well all come together.

Named the 2019 Jefferson Scholar of the National Endowment for the Arts, Dr. Charon’s founded of the Program in Narrative Medicine Program at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons upon completing her Doctorate in Literature. This program has trained more than a thousand healthcare providers in the art of listening to, interpreting, absorbing, metabolizing, and being moved by patients’ stories.

Her ground-breaking books, Narrative Medicine: Honoring the Stories of Illness (Oxford 2006) connects active listening to the delivery of effective care through a carefully presented case study of the physician’s own awakening to the connection between medicine and literature. Stories Matter: The Role of Narrative in Medical Ethics (Routledge 2002) gathers essays by providers for whom narrative practice has deepened their sense of ethical responsibility and provided pathways for patient-centered care. Principles and Practice of Narrative Medicine (Oxford 2016) compiles lessons from the faculty of Columbia University’s Program in Narrative Medicine. These texts, plus Charon’s revered presentations and facilitations, provide all pracitioners with the tools for restoring Art to the Science of Medicine.
